Starring the director as a struggling portrait artist working the streets of 1989's Greenwich Village, Sidewalk Stories follows the artist as he now navigates the streets with a small toddler, the daughter of an acquaintance, as their paths merge through unfortunate circumstance.

Shot in black and white and nearly silent, Lane makes a direct reference to Charlie Chaplin's The Kid, making heavy use of tongue-in-cheek humor to punctuate the drama portrayed on the screen. Poignant and affecting, Lane's work paints a harsh but sometimes gentle view of city life, highlighting the daily inhumanities of city life in a humane cast.
