In wartime Canada, a sense of morality and duty pervade small towns everywhere. Mother is a housewife and keeps the hearth with her meek, wallflower of a daughter Jeannie (played by Carol Kane in one of her earliest roles). After Jeannie is taken advantage of and becomes pregnant, the household must scramble to keep the illusion of presentability. With little regard for her autonomy or personhood, a marriage is arranged and it will be the happiest day of Jeannie's life. In a world where morality may be imposed upon the body, we must ask ourselves questions about the insidious role of authority in the family unit and the duality of oppression and enablement.
