Suicide Club

Suicide Club
Director: Sion Sono, 2001.
Japan, 99 minutes.
Japanese with English subtitles.

A strange new trend is on the rise in Japan, strings of suicides among groups of young people seem to be a new fad. At each scene police seem to find more clues that only drive the mystery deeper. Cryptic codes hidden on web forums and in pop songs, a duffel bag filled with a roll of human skin from different donors, none of the clues quite add up. Taking on traditional themes seen at the beginning of the 21st century in Japanese film, like social isolation and the insidious nature of new forms of technology and the increasing divide between generations, Suicide Club is a strange and gory mystery dripping with buckets of blood.
