The Driller Killer

The Driller Killer
Director: Abel Ferrara, 1979.
United States, 95 minutes.
English.

The atmosphere of paranoia and fear of old New York is captured in Abel Ferrara's Driller Killer, where a young artist sharing a rathole apartment with two roommates is slowly overwhelmed by the squalid nature of the city and goes on a psychotic rampage with a power drill to aid him. More than a basic gore-fest, the film is only punctuated by anarchic violence as a reaction to the gradually building frustration of a man being driven to madness by everything that surrounds him, from his own desperation, to the punk rock band next door, to the sheer turmoil of the city itself.
