Wittgenstein

Wittgenstein
Director: Derek Jarman, 1993.
United Kingdom, 72 minutes.
English.

Wittgenstein is Derek Jarman’s visually striking and experimental telling of Viennese philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s life and work. It is a decidedly stylized film, staged theatrically - a black void for backdrop, props and lavish costumes indicating scenes and passage of time. Using rich visual metaphors to portray of Wittgenstein’s analyses of languages and thought throughout his life, Jarman also casts a tender and haunting light on the philosopher’s queer relationships. Like many of Jarman’s films, the ever enigmatic Tilda Swinton is featured in the cast.
