Perfumed Nightmare

Perfumed Nightmare
Director: Kidlat Tahimi, 1977.
Philippines, 93 minutes.
English.

An examination of colonization, modernization, and progress set in the Philippines, director Kidlat Tahimi plays a jeepney driver in an isolated, rural village, idealizing America and images of the western world. When the opportunity arises for him to travel to Europe and see the west for himself, he is enamored with visions of progress, but his ties back to his homeland drive an internal conflict that fills the screen. What is the cost of progress? Of modernity led by the west? Of internalized colonization? Based on the experiences of the director, writer, and star on life split across continents and cultures this film provides an interesting and witty perspective on the sometimes domineering hand of mass culture in the presence of innocence.
