Night on the Galactic Railroad
Director: Gisaburô Sugii, 1985.
Japan, 113 minutes.
Japanese with English subtitles.
Based on the best selling book of Japanese novelist Kenji Miyazawa, Night on the Galactic Railroad presents us with a village of cats preparing to celebrate a summer festival. In the middle of the festival one young misfit cat, Giovanni, unwittingly takes a trip aboard a cosmic train to explore the outer limits of the galaxy or wherever the train may lead him.
Thoughtfully paced, Galactic Railroad touches on themes of spirituality and what lies beyond this life with fantastical imagery and a gentle score to accompany the philosophical reflections on the afterlife found in this film.
