The Headless Woman

The Headless Woman (La Mujer Sin Cabeza)
Director: Lucrecia Martel, 2008.
Argentina, 87 minutes.
Spanish with English subtitles.

Driving down a dirt road in northwestern Argentina, a woman hits something — or someone. The woman is shaken and continues driving. From here on, she is slowly driven into a fugue state as confusion and uncertainty takes over. Martel’s eerie film has a slow-burn pacing that lends the aura of a ghost tale, except here she is haunted by her own denial and doubts, as well as the class disparities that surround her upper-class Argentinian life. This psychological film unravels at a measured and deliberate pace, leaving the viewer to piece together the clues — if the mystery can even be solved.
