Portrait of Jason

Portrait of Jason
Director: Shirley Clarke, 1967.
United States, 105 minutes.

Jason Holliday, born Aaron Payne, sits in filmmaker Shirley Clarke's room in The Chelsea Hotel, drink in hand, for a 12 hour interview about himself. Depicted here are the highlights of this interview, from Holliday's origins, to his work as a hustler, his dreams of opening a nightclub, and his experiences as a gay black man in 1960's America. Not depicted is the dialog that emerged following the release of Clarke's documentary about the dynamic duality both filmmaker and subject hold as exploiter and exploited. Clarke paints a fantastic portrait of a man, capturing a fleeting image not neatly relegated to any preconceived notions of race, class, and sexuality.
