United States, 91 minutes.

In recent history, queer media, particularly media focused on gay men were often subject to the cliche's that come with the hegemony of whiteness. Despite the strides being made in queer media, multifaceted depictions of people of color in queer media were far and few between. Though not always perfect, Punks is a queer friendship story about four black queers moving into their third decade of life. Though progressed by a plot about finding romance, the merit of the film is truly the dynamic character development and expert handling of topics like living with HIV, alcohol and drug dependence, moving well beyond the guilty pleasures of a catty gay movie.
