The Theatre of Mr. and Mrs. Kabal

The Theatre of Mr. and Mrs. Kabal
Director: Walerian Borowczyk, 1967.
France, 80 minutes,
French with English subtitles.

The director's debut feature film, Mr. and Mrs. Kabal is largely animated with some intercut live action shots, it is a far cry from Mary Poppins. Framed as a day in the life of the absurd couple, we see various episodic vignettes of the couple's life together. Mrs. Kabal, is tall, imposing, headstrong, and cruel. Equally strange is her husband, the short, stocky little man that tends to her every need. The movie reads like a vaudeville show of interconnected scenes in an otherworldly post-apocalyptic desert with a dry and austere sense of humor surely not meant for children.
