Sugar & Spice

Sugar & Spice
Director: Francine McDougall, 2001.
USA, 93 minutes.
English.

Before Spring Breakers, there was Sugar & Spice: a group of pretty, popular cheerleaders are out to rob a bank. Though not nearly as self-indulgent, S&S is still thoroughly laced with pop culture references and iconography, from learning how to pull a heist from the movies, to pulling off the heist dressed as proto-Barbie dolls, to one girl's obsession with Conan O'Brian. Falling towards the extreme end of the cheerleader movie spectrum, S&S is sugary sweet but with a caustic bite. Though the characters may be clueless the film as a whole is not, by merit of absurd teenage desperation.
