Wedding in White

Wedding in White
Dir: William Fruet, 1972.
Canada, 103 minutes.

In wartime small-town Canada, a sense of morality and duty pervade. Mother is a housewife and keeps the hearth with her meek, wallflower of a daughter Jeannie (played by Carol Kane in a very early role). The family is soon rocked by a rape and subsequent pregnancy, and forcefully arranges a marriage for Jeannie. So follows the happiest day of a young woman's life, all with little regard for her autonomy or personhood. In a world where morality and tradition may be imposed upon the body, we must ask ourselves questions about the role family plays in our personal lives, as well as tradition and societal expectations.
