The concubine of an old rich man receives a large inheritance upon his death and returns to her childhood village. She is regarded with suspicion and disdain, but falls in love with a respected soldier named Seisaku. Against the will of the village, the two wed, developing a strange relationship of codependence and isolation, but Seisaku is quickly sent to war and his wife is left in the village. Driven mad by his absence, his wife will not soon let him deprive her of his love again in an obsessive and passionately violent saga that soon engulfs the entire village.
