The Rink

The Rink
Dir. Sarah Friedland, 2012.
United States, 55 minutes.

One of the last of its kind, the Branch Brook Park Skating Rink in Newark stands when so many other New York City skating rinks have since cut the music and turned off the lights. While the city of Newark begins to try and forge a new renaissance of development and growth, Branch Brook remains, sandwiched between public housing and a highway, cherished by city skaters of various backgrounds as a place to escape the day-to-day and forge their own communities. Though not the first of it's kind, the number of spaces like this grow fewer with each passing year. Mentioned are some of the great city skating rinks like Skate Key in the Bronx, or Empire Roller Rink in Crown Heights, the birthplace of roller disco, now a self-storage facility. This documentary takes a look into the role of this skating rink, and opens questions about who partakes in the narrative of development and renewal as a seemingly blind force.
