20 Centimeters (20 Centimetros)
Dir. Ramon Salazar, 2005.
Spain, 112 minutes.
Spanish with English subtitles.
If Pedro Amoldovar did Bollywood, this would be it. A narcoleptic transgender sex worker, saving for the final step in her transition, a gender reassignment surgery. However, her roommate, a get-rich-quick schemer and dwarf, and her destitute neighbors seem to constantly derail her plans to save. To complicate things, she also finds herself in love with a man who accepts her as she is, questioning her own ideas of gender identity. A colorful film punctuated by absurdist high-production musical numbers that make up her frequent narcoleptic dreams, Salazar's 20 Centimeters brings the issues of some of the most marginal members of society out of the frequent cast of gloom and dread to something more optimistic.
