Dancehall Queen

Dancehall Queen
Directors: Rick Elgood, Don Letts, 1997.
Jamaica, 98 minutes.

From Don Letts, videographer to The Clash, comes Dancehall Queen, a gritty and colorful drama portraying the drama of the life of a street vendor and single mother trying to make ends meet in Kingston, Jamaica. Seeking a way out, she takes on a new life in the dancehall, building a reputation for herself as a newcomer to the dancefloor, eventually entering a televised contest to become Jamiaca's Dancehall Queen, take the cash prize and lift herself and her children from their working-class life. A little improbable, but well acted, with a booming soundtrack and colorful dancefloor scenes and choreography.
