A Year Without Love
Director: Anahi Berneri, 2005.
Argentina, 95 minutes.
Spanish with English subtitles.
Set in the late 90's at the dawn of anti-retroviral therapy, Pablo is a young gay writer living in Buenos Aires. He seeks out companionship and intimacy, but the stigma of his status leaves him with little response to his classified ads he places. Seeking intimacy anywhere he can find it he falls into the underbelly of Argentina's S&M scene, becoming detached from himself as he begins to equate his emotional desires with physical urge, deluding himself into believing that the emotional attraction he feels towards his lover is mutual. Based on the real life and writing of the screenwriter Pablo Perez, who has since published equals to his original writing, A Year Without Love takes a non-judgmental view toward it's protagonist and context, depicting him as a man lost in a world that would mark him as a deviant and pariah, a walking infectious agent, when he is simply a man stricken with fear and uncertainty, seeking fulfillment wherever it may find him.
