Pastoral Hide and Seek
Director: Shuji Terayama, 1974.
Japan, 104 minutes.
Japanese with English subtitles.
Semi-autobiographical in the loosest sense, Pastoral Hide and Seek reads as a surrealist Post-war coming of age tale that takes a sudden meta tone as the film shifts near it's midway point to add an additional layer of depth to a film already drenched in experimental, avant-garde visuals illustrating the journey of the artist seeking himself in the rural Japanese countryside. The result is a complex, introspective, spellbindingly subversive film about the artist, reality and reconstruction of memory that deserves more than one viewing.
