Drop Dead Gorgeous
Dir. Michael Patrick Jann, 1999.
United States, 97 minutes.
A piece of work greater than the sum of its parts, DDG features an strangely mixed female cast (Kirsten Dunst, Denise Richards, Ellen Barkin, Kirstie Alley, Allison Janney) providing OUTSTANDING comedic performances. All across America, thousands of teen girls compete to win the title of Miss American Teen Princess (Sponsored by Sarah Rose Cosmetics), and we have the chance to take a look at the local pageant taking place in Mount Rose, MN where the hopes and dreams of the local crop of girls hang in the balance. Styled like a documentary, what first appears to be a teen comedy begins to reveal itself to have a murder-mystery element as contestants begin to drop like flies and the comedy reveals itself to be blisteringly dark. Laced with Minnesota Nice accents, DDG is somehow a perfect depiction of the goings on in smalltown America while completely over the top in the best way.
