Women on Film: Pam Grier

Saturdays in October, sample the filmography of Pam Grier, at 11:30p. Tickets $8.

October 7:
Foxy Brown
Dir. Jack Hill, 1974.

A voluptuous black woman takes a job as a high-class prostitute in order to get revenge on the mobsters who murdered her boyfriend.

Cinema's first black female action star, Pam Grier's iconic status holds a strange place in film. Pivoting away from small parts to the lead in a time when roles for people of color were far and few between, and rarely more than supporting roles. Grier's filmography is hardly reminiscent of any depictions post-riot grrrl feminism though. Grier's career was built upon sexploitation and blaxploitation, however, Grier was able to bring a level of performance not often seen in the genre, blurring the lines of empowerment and exploitation and making Grier an icon to know.
